"In our highly sophisticated society, with its so-called civilized culture and higher education, we are taught to try, test and challenge every concept. We are urged to prove the reality of ideas, theories or hypotheses. Our mentors tell us to "discover the facts." We are encouraged to submit everything to the observable tests of our five fallible, fickle, physical senses in the scientific process.

Amid all of our proud and arrogant preoccupation with our human processes we completely omit and casually overlook the entire realm of the Spirit. Totally immersed in natural phenomena, we behave as though there were no supernatural forces at work in the universe. Utterly preoccupied with fallible human perspectives, we simply ignore God's view or His vision. The net result is that we become people who are actually dominated and directed not by God, in whom we claim to believe, but by our own humanism based on: 1. Finding out facts2. Data processing3. Twentieth century technology-increasingly taking the form of computer print-outs, etc.

The consequence of such conduct is that we live our lives, not on the bedrock of fearless faith in God and His Word, but on the shaking sand of scientific fact-finding. This is precisely what Moses and Israel did in sending spies into the Promised Land. Instead of simply trusting the Lord and acting on His advice, they decided to deliberately discover all the facts for themselves. It was utter folly. But beyond that it was blatant unbelief in God's commitments to them." Phillip Keller
